Flyer :: Hands Up Who Wants To Die

Album reviews man, they’re so hard to do. The more I listen to the Hands Up Who Wants To Die album Buffalo, buffalo, buffalo, Buffalo, buffalo the more I want to write about it. The more confused I get because it’s a beautiful thing, all angles and noise, edges and respite, razorriffs, visceralvocals, heinoushooks, yet on the face of it, as smooth as a mirror, as sheer as cliff-face that invites you to plunge without a rope, so strong is the net of eleven songs they’ve woven into one. While on one hand I’m tempted to draw comparisons with other eminent hardcore bands that have obviously been an influence, it just feels lazy for me to reel out The Jesus Lizard or Black Flag parallels. As you’d expect from a band comprised of a multitude of seasoned hands, the musicianship shows these guys at the top of their game and the production is superb, bridging a seamless route from stage to studio, Dublin to Frankfurt. So you know, I don’t really know what else to say except – astounding. I think Into The Forest, Wompy and Stopwatch with its ‘roarrrrrz’ are my favourites but this is gonna grow and grow….

They play the Mercantile tonight with The Jimmy Cake, Melodica Deathship and The Wizards of Firetop Mountain. In terms of super-heavy massive-buzz gigs, this one’s gonna ride roughshod over anything else going on in the capital tonight. HUWWTD really do need to be seen live to believe your ears and with a line-up like that, it’s nothing short of a bargain at the price. Properwhopper.
