The Whispering Woods is a new album by Cubs - eleven musicians in total, made up of members from Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon, United Bible Studies, C Joynes, Plinth, Agitated Radio Pilot, Yawning Chasm and “other travellers on the folky-margins” – a joint release on Rusted Rail and Deadslackstring. According to the press release the thirteen songs on the album wer recorded in Ireland, England and Africa.
Born out of improvisation, Cubs have delivered an album album of 21st century psych-folk stylings comprised of late night lysergic lullabies, occasionally electrocuted acoustica and cosmic composition, while also finding time to take in spectral strings, backwoods progressions and tripped-out trad. The album is housed in a beautiful hand-assembled sleeve. Initial copies ordered from Rusted Rail will include a bonus 3” disc of additional material called “The Cubs’ Tapes”….
The video above for Blackberry Lane is something else, filmed in a sombre light and as the name suggests, the set and characters are constructed entirely of ultra-twee nursery toys. The music’s gentle, pastoral introduction seems to twirl in on itself as the video progresses, reaching a perilous height to match the dark theme and cruel twists, stuff of Sylvanian Families boardroom executives’ nightmares….
