Imagine the scene: the air is red. Blackness surrounds. Sharpened to a razor point, plectrums gleam. Steel strings are tense, waiting. On all sides, the troops ready for battle. The stakes are high; not world domination, not family revenge but something far more precious to an Irish band – a slot at the country’s most popular festival, Electric Picnic.

As announced a few weeks ago, Pick For The Picnic is a series of gigs run by POD that give new bands an extra chance to play at the festival. Starting tonight, continuing tomorrow and next Wednesday and Thursday week, sixteen bands will play each night with one chosen as the heat winners to go forward to the final on 1 September. The bands are

Wednesday 10 August ::

Tandem Felix
Spies
Come On Live Long
The Razor Ball

Thursday August 11th ::
Casanova Wave
Eatenbybears
Cfit
Women’s Murder Club

Wednesday August 17th ::
Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters
The Midnight Phil Eoin Callers
The Depravations
Fred & Bob

Thursday August 18th ::
Zombie Computer
Leaders Of Men
Cheap Freaks
Ghostnote

I think that’s a great-looking line-up and can’t wait to hear who gets through. Last year’s winners Cloud Castle Lake can attest to the fact that it makes a huge difference.  They’d been gigging away for a few years, doing really well in small bursts but it was only after winning the PftP spot that media journalists and bloggers really started paying attention.

The gigs take place in Crawdaddy and are totally free so if you find yourself hankering for good music and fun times, drop in and cheer on the one you want to win.
