Harmless Noise

Something gorgeous this way comes. I’ve written about Yawning Chasm before but only in very small drips. Until now, there wasn’t much to say because all we had were a few drifting flotsam video clips. In a mighty swell, two full-length albums appeared on Bandcamp, as well as the announcement of a Dublin gig in Designist with Brigid Power Ryce and Gavin Prior this Sunday 11 March.

Simple but not bare, I find Yawning Chasm very difficult to write about. Words seem futile. Aaron Coyne pins all of this together with artless flair, the main emphasis riding on guitar and vocals, peppered with keys and other flourishes. There’s a naturally bleached quality of something left out in the air and direct sunlight, freed from stuffy, shady confines. Spacious and steady, it comes across as music for good listeners, for people who never say a word during gigs, freewheeling folk who ride bicycles for the buzz of being alone. A simple pleasure. You may download Snarl and The Shadow Is That Hidden for free from Bandcamp.
