A music blog from Ireland.

This is it lads. Time to bid farewell to Richie Egan, the grounded star of pop, as he leaves us with the magnificent Ocean Of Frequency and prepares to depart for a new life in Sweden. A week since the band celebrated a staggering second win of the Choice Music Prize, Jape mark the achievement with a gig at Whelan’s tonight, supported by Ships and Reid.
Achievement? In my eyes, Jape, and its frontman Richie, are the first band of this time to be highly regarded all over this country on the basis of merit alone, for constant quality in the music we love, across four albums and countless live shows. There has been no need for international success, stardom, scandal, subterfuge or any of the other ploys that bring fame but there’s no doubt that the name is already inked into Irish music’s history books.
I’m short on time today otherwise I’d love to have put together a mix of all my favourite songs from the last few years so instead, (as if you need an excuse) soak up this esteemed winner one more time. You can also download the 2003 album Cosmosphere free from Soundcloud.
Tickets for tonight’s gig at Whelans are sold out but Twitter users can keep an eye on #ticketfairy for spares.
