An email with a link to this new set of tracks from Cork’s Private Underground Residence arrived last night but I didn’t listen. I already heard this track Snuffbox last year. Woke up muttering “private underground residence” and waited for the kettle while sluggishly thinking through the connotations of the name. It kind of appeals to the elitist, excitable psyche, dubbing a bit of mystery into a statement with clearly unconventional connotations. At the same time, the meek-spirited will be put off. It was heavy stuff first thing in the morning.

And it’s still heavy now. Having leapt into Snuff Box I now have the lyric ‘you tried to murder gravity‘ to contend with while listening to the unplottable courses and tracts that this single and its remixes hurtle through. You wouldn’t just slap a label of ‘alternative’ on Private Underground Residence, no more than you’d place a ‘kids go free’ sign outside a construction site. Just leave well enough alone. The type of song that would never work without the scant lyrics, in Snuffbox there are rock thrusts, prog twists and filthy impassioned put-downs, which get booted even further out of the box by Molotov Ape and The Person.
Snuffbox is free to download from Bandcamp with unfixed prices on the remixes. Private Underground Residence will release an album Dynamics of Idealism later this year.
