Forbidden Fruit has dominated the Irish festival scene for the past couple of years as promoters POD drew in big names for the green city space of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham over June bank holiday weekend. Yesterday (5 March) the 2013 line-up was announced…and with headliners Kasabian and Primal Scream, was greeted with considerable dismay from fans who expected edgier entertainment for summer’s first real long weekend.
The inclusion of whimsical producer Four Tet and super-hot rapper Mykki Blanco proves that far from being out of touch, POD’s problem in booking acts is probably that the biggest names had already been scooped up and the coffers weren’t quite full enough to aim even bigger. Instead the promoters are playing it safe, hedging their bets by counting on diehard fans of the UK headliners to snap up tickets. Austra, James Blake, Chic, Crystal Castles, Daphni and Neon Neon are actually pretty decent festy fare once you look past the biggest font on the poster, while the Irish line-up of Fight Like Apes, Frank B, Girls Names, Kormac’s Big Band, Le Galaxie, New Jackson and Tieranniesaur is in fact the best array of local music I’ve seen announced by a major event so far.
